Butterfly Pea Flower (Clitoria ternatea) is native to Ternate, Moluccas region. It has been widely spread across South East Asia. This flower has no particular taste, which makes it perfect as natural food colorants. Under the Javanese tradition, this flower is use to make a blue rice (rice cooked with the infusion of blue pea flower water) called as Tumpeng Kapuranto, which symbolize a pledge to be granted an apology. Traditionally, this flower is also used as eye cleanser by soaking the flower in lukewarm water and once the color is extracted, the water is used to wash the irritated eyes.
